These tropical smoothies were inspired from my recent trip to the Big Island of Hawaii. We stayed at guest house in Kona overlooking the ocean. There were all kind of organic fruit trees and organic vegetables growing in the yard. Everyday when we got back from the beach, we would walk outside and pick whatever we wanted, make smoothies and sit on our deck and watch the sunset. These smoothies are high in nutrients, and high in protein, and have plenty of healthy fat.
Normally, I don’t recommend that people eat a lot of tropical fruit as it tends to be high in sugar and can raise your glucose levels too high. However, these smoothies contain a lot of protein and healthy fat from the coconut milk, avocado and hemp seeds to keep your blood sugar balanced and stable. Some of them also contain kale and parsley to cut the sugar content down, and they are all sweetened with Stevia. Stevia is a sweetener that comes from an herb and it has zero calories and carbs. It is the only sweetener that most experts agree is safe.
Every time I make these tropical smoothies, it takes me right back to Hawaii. I think about the days at the beach, long walks, bogey boarding, swimming with dolphins, snorkeling with sea turtles, picnic lunches of tropical shrimp salad, rainforests, and driving a convertible down coastal roads.
